Refugee and Migrant Narrative In No Safe Place by Deborah Ellis

By Seemi Aziz, University of Arizona

No Safe Place by Deborah Ellis, undocumented immigrant childrenThe well-executed plot of No Safe Place by Deborah Ellis follows the journey to freedom of three undocumented immigrant children. While the children struggle to reach the shores of England, a British orphan, released from the bonds of an oppressive uncle, joins them. These children, Abdul from Baghdad, Cheslav from Russia, Jonah from England, and the only female, Rosalia, a Romani, develop throughout the story. Ellis depicts a rich cultural background of the countries with distinct circumstances for each character. This story begins in France and culminates in England, providing a fine description of the traumatic lives many immigrants lead in France.

Ellis masterfully articulates a message of peace and its elusive nature. The turmoil within other countries relates, with a sharp contrast to the peace found in the streets of Cornwall. The story identifies issues of illegal immigration and some of the reasons for it. Readers sympathize with the undocumented immigrant children and their wishes to reach any place that can provide them safety. The view of oppressors from different cultures provides a balanced viewpoint.

Abdul, who is Muslim, has a positive depiction as the main protagonist of the story. Abdul is presented as caring and sensitive even though he has many forces working against him. He struggles with his life, the loss of his family and the loss of his close friend in his home country while trying to reach Cornwall. Abdul’s loyalty and sincerity show in his own way of taking action: carrying a token of his friend to England. Ellis also does not overstate extremist views towards women or homosexuals.
