WOW Stories Indexed by Directory of Open Access Journals

By Rebecca Ballenger, Associate Director, Worlds of Words

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) now indexes WOW Stories: Connections from the Classroom, a free, open access, on-line, academic publication of Worlds of Words: Center of Global Literacies and Literatures in the University of Arizona College of Education. WOW Stories contains blind, peer-reviewed vignettes written by educators about children’s experiences reading and responding to literature, the content of which will increase in reach as aggregators, databases, libraries and other publishers access the entry in DOAJ.

WOW Stories banner has a solid background and lists the journal title

As the new designation raises the visibility of educator voices, “more researchers, scholars and educators will read about the work conducted in classrooms with students around global literacies and literatures. In turn, their work will have a greater impact on an international level,” says Mary Fahrenbruck, WOW Stories editor and Associate Professor in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration and Leadership, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico.

WOW Stories joins 16,524 journals in 80 languages from 126 countries currently indexed in the DOAJ. The rigorous process required for inclusion confirms the strong reputation of the journal, which has been publishing open access research for over a decade. “The DOAJ affiliation lets potential authors know that WOW Stories is a high quality, peer-reviewed journal; a journal they can trust and be proud to have their work published in,” Fahrenbruck says.

The DOAJ logo uses white text against a black background for contrast and three overlapping petals in shades of orange, orange being synonymous with open access.

Additional benefits of the DOAJ indexing includes increased readership exposure to other free resources offered on WOW’s website, such as the database of global books for young people, global reading lists and virtual programming.

WOW worked closely with UArizona librarians Kimberly Chapman and Ellen Dubinsky to prepare for their DOAJ application. Through this process, all three of WOW’s open access journals were included in the UArizona Campus Repository. WOW plans to submit two additional journals, WOW Review and WOW Libros, for indexing in the DOAJ within the next year.

Readers can access the current issue of WOW Stories, learn about submission guidelines and submit a manuscript at wowlit.org/on-line-publications/stories. For more information, contact wow@arizona.edu.
