WOW Book Fiesta: Cartooning Workshop with Yasmine Surovec

On your mark, get set, DRAW! Ignite your creativity and join author-illustrator Yasmine Surovec for a cartooning workshop held at Worlds of Words! Artists young and old can learn helpful hints to create their own comics.

“Here’s a chance for young people to gain skills to turn story ideas into a visual reality,” says Rebecca Ballenger, Coordinator of Outreach and Collections at Worlds of Words. “And who could be more fun to share how a professional brings their art to life than a person who adapts so well to the interference of cats?”

Surovec is the author/illustrator of the book Cat Vs. Human and the popular comic blog of the same name. She also wrote and illustrated the picturebooks I See Kitty and A Bed for Kitty in addition to the chapter book series, My Pet Human. Originally from the Philippines, she spends her time in both California and Arizona. The workshop with Surovec is part of Worlds of Words’ WOW Book Fiesta program, which hosts events for children of all ages (and the young at heart). The event is free and open to the public; all artists, aspiring or otherwise, are encouraged to join. Free professional development is also available for teachers.

Worlds of Words is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Free parking is available at the surface parking lot north of the intersection of First and Vine. Paid parking is available at the Second St. Garage next door to the College of Education. Located just off of the 2nd St. streetcar stop.
