This is an absorbing novel is for older readers. However, sharing it in a high school class may provoke challenges because of the following topics in the book: a passionate love affair, bisexuality, adultery, and euthanasia. Geertrui’s love affair with Jacob’s grandfather who is married results in a pregnancy. With the popularity of movies with similar topics, this book seems appropriate as a choice for students.
