I recommend this book for all grade levels as either a read-aloud or an independent reading book. It is a wonderful story that teaches the meaning behing true acts of kindness which every child and adult for that matter should read about.
This compelling, Newbery Honor award winning, children’s novel takes place in Paris. Armand, the main character, and a very poor man meets a Gypsy who warns him about someone who may try to steal his heart from him. When one day Armand goes “home” to the place where he sleeps under the bridge, he finds a family of three children. He begins to care for them while their mother is at work because they have no father. As the story continues, Armand and the children face obstacles together that in the end, get them to a happy place. The gypsy returns. This is a lovely book that is perfect for the holidays because it takes place during Christmas time in France. It is a cheerful story that can keep any one’s interest and bring a smile to your face. It reminded me a little of Miracle on 34th Street. Carlson’s use of language draws you into the novel and keeps you connected with the characters and not wanting to put the book down.
