Diaspora in Recent Global Books

by Seemi Aziz

shinkiari-81770_640The month of July continues the issues, topics, and concerns that deal with diaspora and its impact in today’s global society. As the discussion about diaspora continues in this forum I needed to add a few thoughts and books that deal with the topic that I have recently come across. Holly and Rebecca have said a lot about diaspora and in-depth background knowledge has been created for our readers on wowlit.org: “The Nature of Diaspora”, “The Sentiments of Diaspora”, “World War II and Diasporas”, and  “The Aftermath of Diaspora”.

Having served on award committees: Outstanding International Books and presently serving on Notable Books for a Global Society I have come across a myriad of books, some worthy and some not, that deal with the perceptions and conceptions of diaspora as being addressed on this site. Holly puts it in a nutshell when she explained the issues of movement in Diasporas: “And with such movement, there is the question of the aftermath of such movements. Do those who were forced to move feel settled in their new homes? Is the new place even home? I would suggest that the aftermath may be similar to borderlands, whereby there is a hybridity of both the old mixed with the new.” The newer books that are coming to the fore for being considered for awards deal with these same questions and some for the resolutions these narratives provide. I will take the aforementioned questions and try to address some of them in this month’s blog.
