Cepeda Stories: Everyone Has a Story to Tell begins with the assertion that each one of us has unique life experiences that are worthy of sharing. This Spring 2025 exhibit of original art by award-winning illustrator, Joe Cepeda, challenges visitors to share their stories. The exhibit is free and open to the public at the Worlds of Words Center in the University of Arizona College of Education.

"Picturebook illustrations are more than visual adornments – they draw us into worlds that ignite our imagination. They reveal layers beyond the text," says Kathy Short, Regents Professor and Worlds of Words Director. "For this exhibit, we curated illustrations by Joe that tell multitudes of stories about the characters based on who is looking at them. At the same time, the illustrations are relatable and encourage us to tell our own stories."

Cepeda sees himself as a visual storyteller. Accordingly, this exhibit provides viewers with understandings around the decisions an illustrator makes to influence story in the event of reading. For Cepeda, this means surrendering himself in support of the story. We may see analog clocks and cellphones in a Cepeda illustration, giving the pieces a timelessness. Cepeda does not predetermine these decisions as he illustrates; instead, they come to him through reaction and invention. But there is a process!

Through his choice of vibrant colors and expressive bodies, Cepeda shows readers how he leans into joy. He appreciates the beauty and fun of the world. "Surrender to it," he suggests. Cepeda is not looking at his books as cinematic but rather pays homage to the 2-dimentional page.

In addition to a peek inside Cepeda's studio, the exhibit includes activities where story telling is driven by images. "These activities invite visitors to let art guide their narratives," says Short. "We hope this flips the script on storytelling and allows us to consider how illustrations can lead the way in crafting unforgettable tales. Each one of us has a story to tell, and this exhibit gives us the chance to tell our stories."
