Lorri J. Santamaría explores the complex reality behind today’s diversity, equity, and inclusion language. Inspired by the legacy of Dr. Richard Ruiz, this talk examines how seemingly innocuous terms can be weaponized, marginalizing communities and distracting from true progress. Witness firsthand the impact on bilingual, multicultural, and multilingual education and discover a path towards reclaiming the transformative power of inclusive language. Dr. Santamaría is an educational leader, bilingual educator, and critical DEI scholar.

A Critical Analysis of Two Decades of Struggle Over the Politics of Curriculum

Resplandor International and the Worlds of Words Center are excited to announce that Dr. Angela Valenzuela and Dr. Emilio Zamora from the University of Texas-Austin will be our co-scholars for the Richard Ruiz Residency this summer in Guanajuato, Mexico. This virtual presentation to the greater UA community will provide an important discussion around the politics of curriculum in our state and country. The Richard Ruiz Scholar In Residence Lecture Series Presents: A Critical Analysis of Two Decades of Struggle Over the Politics of Curriculum

Virtual Presentation by Dr. Angela Valenzuela and Dr. Emilio Zamora from the University of Texas-Austin, 2023 Richard Ruiz Scholars-in-Residence

Drs. Valenzuela and Zamora will present the historical context of the events that led to the battle over Mexican American Studies in Arizona as well as discuss the social movements and politics of knowledge involved int his struggle over the politics of curriculum.

In addition to the lecture, the two scholars will work with students from the University of Arizona, the University of Guanajuato and other international universities during their month-long summer residence. They will also make scholarly presentations to the greater Guanajuato community, work with local teachers and engage students and families at Resplandor International.

Resplandor International Richard Ruiz Scholar/Artist in Residence Announcement

Resplandor International LogoResplandor International in collaboration with Worlds of Words and the University of Arizona College of Education with corporate sponsor Learning A-Z will announce the accomplished scholar or artist from the world of children’s literature, visual arts, literacy or international education for a 2019 residency in Guanajuato, México.

The selected scholar or artist will provide an international presence for the collaborating institutions in the greater community of Guanajuato. The goal of the residency is to expand intercultural understandings and global perspectives through the use of high quality, culturally authentic international literature. Additionally, the submitted proposal might focus on promoting reading engagement, language development, critical literacy or written expression through global literature. Proposed activities of the scholar/artist should consider providing classes, presentations, performances, lectures, seminars, and exhibitions in the community to promote their proposal. An artist in residence for example could promote artistic expression by teaching the craft of book illustration and design. The scholar in residence will work in collaboration with Dr. Todd Fletcher, the director of the Verano en México summer study abroad program and Resplandor International in Guanajuato.
